According to the C3 Framework for Social Studies, the four core disciplines of social studies instruction are civics, economics, geography, and history. As a teacher, it will be critical for you to understand what each discipline involves and why it is important for students to learn the concepts and skills associated with each discipline. Each state’s Department of Education provides their own version of social studies standards, but their standards are essentially derived from the C3 Framework.

This assignment will allow you to practice planning for social studies curriculum and understand how the C3 Framework standards align to the curriculum.

Assignment Deliverable

Choose an elementary grade level (K–5) to focus on.

Create a 1- to 2-page outline that addresses the following information by first researching your State’s K-5 Social Studies Curriculum and aligned standards to address the following:

1.Indicate the grade level you chose and the theme your grade level focuses on.

 2. Choose an emphasis topic from the table above and describe the core discipline (civics, history, economics, geography) the topic aligns with and why. Consider reviewing Dimension 2 of the

C3 Framework
(pp. 29–51) to understand what each core discipline involves.

· For example, the kindergarten topic about the importance of rules and responsibilities would align with Civics because it teaches students about how to participate in a governing society.

 3. Indicate the C3 Framework standard(s) that apply to your topic based on the tables in Dimension 2 of the

C3 Framework
 (pp. 29–51).

· For example, the standards that would apply to the kindergarten topic about the importance of rules and responsibilities are:

· D2.Civ.1.K-2: Describe the roles and responsibilities of people in authority.

· D2.Civ.3.K-2: Explain the need for and purposes of rules in various settings inside and outside of school.

· D2.Civ.6.K-2: Describe how communities work to accomplish common tasks, establish responsibilities, and fulfill roles of authority.

· D2.Civ.12.K-2: Identify and explain how rules function in public (classroom and school) settings.

 4. Describe a key concept you would focus on related to the topic.

· For example, to teach kindergarteners about the importance of rules and responsibilities, it would be beneficial to teach students about classroom and school rules, including roles and responsibilities.

 5. Identify a grade-appropriate book or piece of literature you would use to tie in language arts or literacy. Explain how the book or literature supports the topic. Cite your source in APA format.

 6. Describe other resources you would use to support the topic, such as virtual resources, artifacts, or guest speakers.

 7. Provide 2 compelling questions you would pose to prompt students’ curiosity of the topic or key concept. Consider reviewing “Dimension 1 of the

C3 Framework
 (pp. 23–27).

8. Describe how you would incorporate current events in your instruction based on the topic or key concept.
