COURSE CODE BAS313 COURSE NAME: LEGAL & ETHICAL ISSUES IN SPORT Task brief & rubrics
Task: Midterm Ethical Case Study Assignment (30% – Week 10)
Subject of the Task: Ethical case study assignment (30%): This is an individual assignment in which the students should apply ethical reasoning and models
for moral decision-making to resolve a case that deals with ethical issues in sports.
The task must be submitted via Turnitin (Report)
Case: Emily is a football player who has been playing in a local youth soccer league for several years. Her performance has caught the attention of scouts
from the nearby prestigious soccer academy. Emily’s parents are eager for her to join the program; however, the academy primarily recruits players
aged 17 and above, and she will turn 17 only in a few months.
The academy agrees to admit her if her parents agree to tamper her age on official documents to meet the age requirement. Her parents decide to trust
the club’s discretion and agreed to change her age in the application.
Emily is the best in her team and after about 6 months a scout from Real Madrid sees Emily skills and contact her parents with an offer to join the
academy squad. The parents, surprised and worried, agreed to the offer.
The player joins RM youth team and progresses rapidly. Her outstanding performances in training sessions and local matches soon caught the attention
of the coaching staff. Her remarkable agility, vision, and scoring ability made her a standout player on the youth team.
One sunny afternoon, as the Youth team was preparing for an important local youth tournament, the club’s Football Director approached Emily’s
parents. The director offered her a position on FC Barcelona’s professional team as soon as she turned 18 years, with an automatic loan to PSG in the
same year.
The offer was overwhelming for Emily and her parents. But there was a problem — the age tampering on Emily’s official documents was never corrected
and she would turn 18 only in the following year. The age deception could damage her career, but there was not enough time to inform the club, in a
routine compliance check on all players, the club’s compliance department noticed issues with Emily’s documents.
During a deep inspection, the discrepancy in Emily’s age documentation was discovered. The club’s investigation revealed the age tampering, which had
allowed Emily to join the club’s academy and play while technically ineligible. Worried about a major sanction from LaLiga or the RFEF, the Club
immediately suspended the player and called a meeting with Legal & Ethics, Technical/Football & Youth Department.
As the Legal & Ethical Dept Director of the Club, prepare a report about the case, considering the legal & ethical implications of this case for Emily, her
parents, the former club and FCB, and a recommendation for the Club about how to address the situation.
