My main interest is to work with at-risk youth ages 10-18 years old, particularly those from minority backgrounds, including youth of color, immigrants, and refugees. I plan to directly serve this vulnerable population as a school social worker, juvenile justice social worker, or counselor.

When working with these youth, I will apply ecological systems theory to understand the risks and protective factors influencing their lives. Specifically, I will assess mental health, trauma, self-esteem, and more at the individual level (Micro). Additionally, I will review elements like communication patterns and access to resources at the family level (Mezzo). Furthermore, at the school/peer level, I will examine factors such as academic performance and any social barriers at school. Moreover, at the community level (Macro), I will analyze neighborhood safety and the availability of youth programs. Ultimately, this broad ecological perspective will allow me to assist youth and families effectively, address risks across systems, and advocate for impactful changes.

I will commit to specialized training to advance my competence with this population. For instance, I intend to complete multiple sessions/seminars in person and via webinar on ways to empower marginalized students this upcoming year. Also, I plan to volunteer to mentor at-risk youth through the juvenile justice programs. Across all of these targeted learning opportunities, I aim to collaborate with diverse community partners while actively serving these youth.

My ultimate goal is to support disadvantaged youths and families while upholding ethical obligations, maintaining self-awareness of my evolving capacity, and centering the voices of those I serve. I strive to balance practical experience with research-based best practices for optimal service. (Kirst-et., al 2018)

The population I am interested in working with is women who have been victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence is a complicated problem that includes financial, emotional, or physical abuse in close relationships. A social worker makes use of micro-skills to assist this population. Anna Scheyett states that everyone needs a superhero who is not scared to jump into the course to fight the good fight with us shoulder to shoulder (TEDx Talks, 2015).

One professional role that a social worker may assume when working with this population is to be a domestic violence advocate. A social worker can provide survivors of domestic violence abuse with advocacy, resources, and support. According to Krist–Ashman & Hull (2018), advocacy involves actively intervening to help clients meet their needs.

The diversity of domestic violence emphasizes ecological theory and the necessity for diverse solutions that consider immediate safety concerns and more general structural factors. The person-in-environment plays a role in this theory. According to Krist-Ashman & Hull (2018), people communicate and interact with others in their environment, and each transaction can be positive or negative. A negative transaction may be the revelation that one you dearly do not love you in return, which can result in domestic violence.

The steps I will take to develop my knowledge of women who have been victims of domestic violence through critical thought and research is by examining the academic resources on domestic violence in detail. A scenario between husband and wife with four children following an argument about providing for the family: the husband repeatedly hits his wife because she is economically and emotionally dependent on him. The intervention process I will use is bringing the couple in for counseling, thereby applying the Triple-A approach. According to Krist-Ashman & Hull (2018), one primary critical thinking method involves asking questions, assessing the facts and issues, and asserting a concluding opinion.
