The four rules of social hierarchy that I selected to expound on referencing a shift in paradigms and thinking within the Floyd organization are as follows:
1. Resistance is Futile
2. If You Want to Score You Have to Play
3. The Game Determines How Well You Do in School
4. You are Who You Know
First, Senge et al. (2012) discusses class hierarchy as hidden rules in understanding organization structure and productivity. Rule 1, Resistance is Futile, means any attempt to resist or oppose of force will ultimately be unsuccessful as the outcome is predetermined and inevitable. In the Floyd organization, it is critical that the leadership team asserts its dominance and assimilate the teachers into our collective. I think it is importance that teachers do not desire to resist the expectations of the organization, as the leadership team members hold the responsibilities of supporting the teachers and aligning their response to instruction with the expectations of the organization.
Next, Rule 2, If You Want to Score, You Have to Play, reference the importance of not standing on the sidelines complaining about something or refusing to commit to doing something, because success will never be in such a situation whereas, no work means no change. In the Floyd organization, its important that each member understands he/she plays a pivotal part in the organization’s structure and the cohesiveness of the group is required for change and productivity. In order to get the job done, all members must be participants and carry out the responsibilities of their roles.
Rule 3, You are who you know, meaning goes without saying…likeminded individuals thrive in common places and do common things. In efforts of ensuring common practices are fluid throughout the Floyd organization, it is important that the leadership team implements processes of collaborative planning to impose a shared vision. The assimilation of learned behaviors are totally environmental. Within the Floyd organization, common practices will bridge gaps and produce collective efficacy.
Finally, Rule 7, The Game Determines How Well You Do in School, references the critical strategies that must be outlined in the strategic plan that the organization’s team is following. The game is the plan. The plan, alongside the intentional efforts for improvement will determine if the organization and members are successful.
Since the restructuring of the organization, the teachers get the most attention as the measures of support are given to them. The focus must be on the people within the organization as human satisfaction is a critical component in organization success (Senge, 1998). Thus, more activities that harness student voice and choice are provided and we have seen a shift in students’ overall proficiencies on state-mandated assessments.
